What does this mean for you? Let’s break down the differences & find out...
Design - Familiar But Intelligently Improved
Yes, the new iPhones look much like the old iPhones. This is the number one area where many will complain, but look more closely và there are key differences.
The iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus look familiar - but there are a lot of differences. Image credit... <+> Apple
Size và Weight Increases
In a first for Apple, the new iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus are actually ever so slightly larger and noticeably heavier than their predecessors. The good news, while you are likely lớn notice the difference holding new & old models side-by-side, in isolation this will be pretty similar:
iPhone 6S: 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.28in) & 143g (5.04oz) iPhone 6S Plus: 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3mm (6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29in) and 192g (6.77oz) iPhone 6: 138.1 x 67 x 6.9mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27in) and 129g (4.55oz)
iPhone 6 Plus: 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1mm (6.22 x 3.06 x 0.28in) và 172g (6.07oz)
In fact, for me, the worst aspect about this thiết kế similarity has nothing to vì with size, but the fact the new phones maintain the same ludicrously slippy finish as the iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus. That’s bad news for both models.
Of course I appreciate covers are a must for most owners, but it would be nice for táo apple to at least try và make a phone which doesn’t act like a bar of soap and offers some ergonomics for the human hand.

Strength Improvements
More positively, the other key takeaway is that structurally both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are significantly stronger. Táo apple openly mocked the so-called ‘Bendgate’ scandal last year when the iPhone 6 and, notably, iPhone 6 Plus were found to warp under relatively meagre pressures.
But privately changes have been made and internal thickening is thought khổng lồ (at least partially) trương mục for some of the weight increases. Consequently the new iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus have switched from Series 6000 lớn Series 7000 aluminium. Series 7000 is over twice as strong và a clip pressure chạy thử has already shown you’ll be highly unlikely khổng lồ bend either model under any force you’d encounter in everyday life.
In addition táo bị cắn has improved the durability of the new iPhones’ glass displays, but it hasn’t given any details regarding how much stronger we can expect them to be.

Winner: iPhone 6S
It gets less of a weight bump while the iPhone 6S Plus is now a genuinely heavy phone, a problem when both remain so slippery
Displays - Ingenious Or Falling Behind?
Another area where the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are receiving criticism is their screens as, despite late rumours lớn the contrary, the resolutions remain unchanged:
iPhone 6S: 4.7-inch, 1334 x 750 pixels, 326 pixels per inch (ppi) iPhone 6S Plus: 5/5-inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels, 401 pixels per inch (ppi)Should this matter? For me no. By comparison the iPhone 6S still has a px density similar to lớn a 4K ‘Ultra HD’ resolution on a 13-inch máy tính xách tay while the iPhone 6S Plus has a pixel density higher than a 4K display on an 11-inch laptop. Smartphones just live in a crazy specifications war where hãng apple refuses khổng lồ fight.
Yes, I would be very surprised if the iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus panels can đứng đầu what Samsung delivered with the 2K Galaxy S6 và Galaxy S6 Edge, but few owners are likely khổng lồ be disappointed when using either iPhone in real world scenarios.
Winner: iPhone 6S Plus
It continues lớn have a noticeably higher px density than the smaller iPhone 6S và with most rivals now sporting 2K displays, 6S owners in particular may feel a little shortchanged
3D touch - Initially Interesting, Potentially Amazing
While lack of a resolution bump will have disappointed many, there is compensation in the size of a new Apple buổi tiệc nhỏ trick…
Like the apple Watch, MacBook và MacBook Pro lines, the iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus now sport a variant of Force touch called ‘3D Touch’. This uses the same pressure sensitive panel as these devices khổng lồ distinguish between different types of touch and gives vibration feedback khổng lồ the user to lớn confirm when force touches are recognised.
This isn’t new - BlackBerry offered something similar with its failed Storm smartphone in 2008 - but what apple seeks to do differently is make 3d touch an intuitive part of the game ios 9 experience. Doing this means starting slowly khổng lồ avoid bamboozling users và off the bat initial user examples are fairly straightforward:
apple Maps - deep press on a destination to jump to lớn turn-by-turn directions táo khuyết Music - deep press on a track lớn automatically địa chỉ cửa hàng it to lớn a playlist Safari - deep press a link to preview the trang web Messages - deep press on a message to preview the conversation Mail - deep press on an email to preview its contents Apps - deep press on their icon khổng lồ launch khổng lồ a specific area of the app or deep press in the tiện ích to bring up the multitasking modeInevitably, however, gaming is perhaps the area with greatest potential for 3d Touch. Unlike 3d touch in the táo apple Watch & MacBooks, cảm biến 3 chiều senses a range of pressures so, for example, the screen could be used lượt thích an accelerator in racing games.
How developers react will be crucial. Cảm ứng 3 chiều requires dedicated hardware so it will not come to older iPhones so the màn chơi of motivation khổng lồ implement it in apps will make or break it.
As such, while touch 3d may not initially be the main reason users want to buy an iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus, its ability lớn fundamentally change how game ios works (for the first time since 2007) means long term it is the most important addition to these new iPhones.

Cameras - A New Force khổng lồ Be Reckoned With
While touch 3d is what has techies enthralled, for kết thúc users perhaps the biggest pull of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus is their new camera technology:
iPhone 6S và 6S Plus – 12 megapixel sensor, F2.0 lens, Focus Pixels, dual-LED flash – 4p video recording. Front: 5 megapixel sensor, F2.0 lens, 1080p video clip recording iPhone 6 và 6 Plus – 8 megapixel sensor, F2.2 lens, Focus Pixels, dual-LED flash – 1080p video clip recording. Front: 1.2 megapixel sensor, F2.2 lens, 720p video recordingWhile on paper these changes don’t appear to lớn be world changing, they drag the new iPhones back into a camera battle where both LG & Samsung had usurped earlier this year.
Yes, the megapixels and apertures on the back still don’t quite match what LG offers with the G4 or Samsung with the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ & Galaxy lưu ý 5 (all use the same sensor) but 5MP front cameras run them close. More to the point their combination with Apple’s legendary image processing software, may just mean the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S come close to lớn delivering the best phone camera experience once again.
Apple has also added a nice gimmick: "Live Photos" records 1.5 seconds of đoạn clip around a photo so it can be made to move, if a user prefers. This is something nokia users have had for several years, but it makes a nice addition lớn iOS.
The big caveat: shockingly táo has again snubbed the smaller iPhone with the 6S not receiving Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) like the 6S Plus. Instead it will have to put up with Digital Image Stabilisation (DIS) which should again give the iPhone phablet a noticeable advantage.
Winner: iPhone 6S Plus
The very disappointing absence of OIS from the iPhone 6S makes this an easy win

Performance - Big Jump, But Memory The Key
As expected, the iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus debut Apple’s next generation táo apple A9 chipset. It also typically refused lớn give away any technical details regarding clock speeds or even RAM (more later), but these should be revealed by teardowns in time.
Instead we get a simple bottom line: the A9 chipset will offer 70% greater CPU performance và 90% greater graphics performance compared khổng lồ the A8 chipset in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
While apple has had bigger performance jumps in iPhone history (notably the iPhone 5S more than doubled the performance of the iPhone 5), little was needed this generation with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus still racing around tiện ích ios without a hint of slowdown.
Instead where the most important change made be made is still a mystery: RAM. The iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus are thought lớn be the first 2GB iPhones and this will be vital khổng lồ the long term advanced multitasking plans in ios 9.
Will there be any real world difference between the two? Actually yes. The higher resolution of the iPhone 6 Plus was found khổng lồ impact its performance compared lớn the iPhone 6 as it has lớn drive more pixels for its display. That remains true again, though it shouldn’t make a great khuyễn mãi giảm giá of difference overall.
Winner: iPhone 6S
Though we can’t see the iPhone 6S Plus struggling to lớn keep up for quite some time
Note: both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus also received upgraded LTE performance, now supporting speeds up to lớn 300Mbit per second. That’s nice, but something you’ll be highly unlikely lớn achieve in real life.

Touch ID 2.0 - Faster and More Secure
With hãng apple Pay slowly gaining mainstream adoption, táo bị cắn has chosen an optimal time khổng lồ bring an upgraded version of cảm ứng ID to lớn the iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus.
It is now even more accurate và has faster recognition than its predecessors, not that many were complaining about cảm ứng ID on the iPhone 5S, (upgraded) iPhone 5C, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus…

Battery Life and Charging
Apple boasts that the A9 chipset is more efficient, but sadly it hasn’t coupled that new efficiency with the extra win of larger capacity batteries. Instead - to much dismay - the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are actually thought to thể thao smaller capacity batteries than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus:
iPhone 6S: 1715 mAh, iPhone 6S Plus: 2750 mAh iPhone 6: 1810 mAh, iPhone 6 Plus: 2915 mAhThe good(ish) news is apple says this won’t mean reduced performance và the new phones will offer exactly the same battery life as their predecessors. This is fine for the long lasting iPhone 6S Plus, but very disappointing for the iPhone 6S as battery life was arguably the worst aspect khổng lồ the iPhone 6.
Furthermore apple continues lớn snub fast charging và wireless charging, both increasingly standard features on rival phones. As such battery life is arguably the most disappointing aspect lớn the new iPhones.
Winner: iPhone 6S Plus
But in reality both lose.
Cost - No Surprises, Storage - A Letdown
With the shift khổng lồ more expensive Series 7000 aluminium (as well as a more premium camera sensor và Touch ID technology) there had been fears iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus prices would increase this year. Happily that hasn’t happened và identical price points remain:
iPhone 6S: $649 (16GB), $749 (64GB) và $849 (128GB) iPhone 6S Plus: $749 (16GB), $849 (64GB) and $949 (128GB)Unfortunately you’ll also lưu ý that means táo khuyết has kept the 16GB base mã sản phẩm for both new iPhones. This is very disappointing, especially in combination with the jump up in camera and đoạn clip resolutions which will consumestorage space a lot quicker.

I can’t defend táo apple here. A 32GB entry point would be far more sensible và the cost difference at Apple’s scales would be negligible (sub $20). As such it appears the real reason is to push customers khổng lồ the 64GB sweet spot in the range, or sell more iCloud storage at a later date.
Hopefully come the iPhone 7 in 2016, 16GB will finally bite the dust.
Winners: iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus 64GB Editions
Separately táo apple has announced the "iPhone upgrade Program" which allows owners on major carrier contracts to lớn upgrade their iPhones every year và take out táo bị cắn Care insurance. This starts at$32pm (16GB iPhone 6S) và includes táo care, but requires you stick with your existing carrier và sign a new two year contract with each upgrade.
Whether this investment is better than simply selling your old iPhone và putting the money towards another unlocked iPhone is mở cửa to debate. Personally the idea of a rolling two year carrier contract doesn"t appeal, but the lure of annual iPhone upgrades will undoubtedly tempt many.
Early Verdict - táo Did Enough, Without Amazing Us
For an ‘S’ year, the iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus are fairly predictable: minor external differences belying significant internal change.
Long term 3d touch is the real news here and it could spell great (or needlessly complex) times ahead for iOS. Meanwhile the additional multitasking capabilities & camera improvements will be giảm giá khuyến mãi clinchers for many.
That said I can’t see most iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus users rushing to lớn upgrade và particularly iPhone 6 users where apple hasn’t addressed its battery weaknesses nor the omission of OIS in the camera. The continuation of a 16GB base option on both models also looks nothing more than mean.
Given the iPhone 5S sold in far greater numbers than the iPhone 5 và those users are finishing their contracts, I still expect the iPhone 6S và iPhone 6S Plus to lớn sell in huge numbers. Probably even greater numbers than the iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus.
Which makes the better first impression? lượt thích last year, if size doesn’t concern you, it is the Plus mã sản phẩm which makes the bigger impact with display, battery life, camera and software advantages.
That said it feels like Apple has pinned an awful lot this year on cảm ứng 3 chiều which may or may not revolutionise its phones. This should be clearer come the iPhone 7 next year by which time I would hope for significantly more interesting design and battery improvements.
